The SLS 3D printer uses a laser as a energy source which selectively melts powdered metal material, fusing them together into a 3D printed part. This technology is part of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), one of the most advanced and reliable technologies in the 3D printing field of additive manufacturing.
Using 3D data from a CAD model, the laser melts the plastic material exactly at the predifined areas in the powderbed of the additive manufacturing system. After the melting process is completed, the building platform is lowered, and a new layer of powder is added. This process repeats layer by layer until the part is completed.
Selective laser sintering is very popular in the field of plastics 3D printing because of its essential advantages like freedom of design, high productivity and low cost per part. In contrast with some other 3D printing technologies, such as stereolithography (SLA) and fused deposition modeling (FDM) SLS 3D printing does not require any support structures. That allows the creation of very complex, almost impossible 3D printed patterns. Producing parts only requires powder and power and no binders nor agents.
